This is the course that sets you off on your way as a paddler(canoeist or kayaker). WE will look at the basics of how to fit your personal gear. Buoyancy aids, helmets, spray deck etc, What paddle and boat to choose, how to adjust all the fittings in the boat so that you are comfy, create power easily and can control the boat. Then we look at the skills of paddling, including forwards, backwards, turning, stopping, steering, sideways and getting in and out safely.

This one day, 1 star course is run in canoes and kayaks, so that you learn the best way to control a craft floating on the water. On top of gaining the one star award, you will spend a gorgeous day messing about on water in a variety of boats. Its a great fun safe introduction to the sport.

Pre-Requisites - None, suitable for anyone interested in paddlesports

Two-day 2 Star Training and Assessment.
The two star course is aimed as an improverment award to develop from either your one star or to expand and increase your fundamental paddlesport skills.

This is also a flat water award which is designed to increase the paddlers experience. The paddler being able to control the movement of the boat in relation to the water and developing a greater understanding.






2 Star Syllabus Canoe and Kayak.

Aim

This is an improvement award that helps paddlers develop fundamental paddlesport

skills on flat water. The emphasis is on gaining a breadth of experience, creating the

desired movement of the boat and developing an understanding into how the paddle,

boat and water interact.

Craft

The award is obtained by taking the assessment in both a kayak and a canoe. Any

style of kayak or canoe is permissible e.g. open cockpit, sit on top, V shaped hull or

flat bottomed etc. Where a doubles crew takes the test, each person must perform

each task from both the bow and stern.

Pre-requisites

Be able to swim – desirable though not essential. If under 14 one should consider

the ‘Paddle power’ scheme.

Must have experience of paddling at least 2 different craft, in 2 different locations

and compete in 2 competitions OR complete 2 journeys of at least 2 hours in

duration.

Two-day 3 Star Kayak Training.

The 3 Star is where the skills become discipline specific so this course is for Kayak. This is a progression from the 2 Star and is aimed at getting the paddler to an intermediate level.


A successful performance at 3 Star level shows that the paddler is competent to paddle on moving. They can do this in a competent manner as part of a led group. There also have the knowledge and ability to help with the running of a trip while being led down a section of a grade 2 river.

Two-day 3 Star Canoe Training.

BCanoes are about travelling distances effortlessly, to this end our 3 star canoe courses look at how to control you canoe on flat water, looking at the required 3 star skills to achieve this, including good paddle choice, trim, sailing, and the actual paddle skills.

Then after a day on the flat, we take these honed skills and apply them to the moving water environment. Here we look at reading the river, planning your route down the rapids, and controlling your canoe.

By the end of your BCU canoe 3 star training you will be happy to control your canoe on large open water and on moving rivers. This will include ferry gliding, breaking in/out, reverse ferries and surfing small waves etc.

Duration - This is a 2 day course, that covers all the required skills and theory. For those of you who have some experience, you should be ready and will be assessed over the two days, for those of you with less experience we would recommend booking a third assessment day after you have consolidated what we have taught you on this course

Both the training and assessment are two day courses. This is again discipline specific. The aim of this award to train and then show that a paddler is now a competent leader.


A successful performance at this level shows that the paddler can lead a group of competent paddlers on river trips on grade 2 and on open water with winds up to force 4. This award is designed for the paddler to show their techniques for moving and exposed water, requiring them to use this skills in a real situation.


This course is aimed at applying the above skills in a leadership context looking at correct ways to lead a group on either moving or open water utilizing correct leading styles and communication and rescue skills.
